The Junior Version of the Seth Harris Childhood Cancer Foundation, the Seth Harris Childhood Cancer Club, has hosted a benefit for the children in treatment at Blair E. Batson and taken on their third collection project. This event, masquerading as a Halloween Party, was a "Candy Bash" held at the Bay Springs Country Club. All area youth were asked to bring one or more unopened bags of candy as admission to the frivolity, where they enjoyed games and food compliments of SHCCF Adult Volunteers. Over 220 bags of candy were collected from the 50+ attendees and were delivered to Blair E. Batson by volunteer Rebekah Sims. Mrs. Sims had this to say about the event, "We at the SHCCF are so proud of our kids and teens who helped this benefit come together to benefit the kids at BEB." Mrs. Sims went on to say that the donation of candy came just in time for one little boy who was in the clinic on the day of delivery. Fresh from a round of steriods and unable to eat breakfast due to blood work, his eyes lit up at the offer of a tasty snack, made possible by kids from the little town of Bay Springs, just down the road.
Candy from the event will also be used in Blair E. Batson's Annual Halloween Carnival. The usual sponsor for this event was unable to provide candy this year, so the donation was especially timely. There was enough candy collected that not only the kids at Blair E. Batson could enjoy the sweets, but also kids and families in residence at the Ronald McDonald house, just across the street from BEB. Families can stay in the Ronald McDonald house while their kids are in treatment at the hospital, providing a close, safe and comfortable respite from the hospital.
SHCCC Member and SBA Freshman Delaney Basset encouraged SBA students and others to bring candy for the kids and said, "Kids in treatment are not able to enjoy Halloween, so we are bringing the treats to them!" Delaney is also encouraging students to bring items for the SHCCC's next project, "Adopt A Floor" in which easy prep food items will be collected for use in the kitchenette area of the 3rd floor at BEB. Often times, parents cannot leave their child to go eat outside of the floor at the hospital, and expense is a huge factor, so items will be donated for use in these situations.
All area Youth are invited to participate in the SHCCC. For more information on the SHCCC or to make a donation of items, call 601-739-3658.
